The Real Story
Beyond The Box Score
Devers found out he'd been traded from Boston to San Francisco in June 2025 while sitting on the Red Sox charter plane — he called himself 'gobsmacked,' grabbed his bags, said goodbye to teammates, and left for a cab into his new life. The trade capped a bitter breakup: Devers felt 'lied to and betrayed' by the Red Sox after they pushed him to move off third base, a demand he'd refused. When the Giants asked him to make the identical move — to first base and DH, clearing third for Gold Glover Matt Chapman — he agreed immediately: 'I am here to play wherever they want me to play.' Off the field, Devers grew up in the Dominican Republic's Sánchez Ramírez province and has donated ambulances back to his hometown through his own foundation.
Not an underdog story — Devers arrived already a star. The real arc is attitude: the identical position change that blew up his relationship with Boston, he embraced without complaint within weeks of arriving in San Francisco.
