The Real Story

Beyond The Box Score

The South Korean outfielder crashed into the center-field wall at Oracle Park chasing a fly ball in May 2024 and tore the labrum in his shoulder, ending his season on the operating table. He came back for 2025 looking like a different hitter: through his first 14 games, Lee became the first Giant since Willie Mays in 1964 to hit .350-plus with 12-plus extra-base hits and at least three stolen bases that early in a season, punctuated by a two-homer game at Yankee Stadium. He's remained one of the Giants' most popular players into 2026, working back again from a smaller back injury that spring.

A season-ending shoulder surgery in 2024 gave way to a start to the 2025 season that hadn't been matched by a Giant since Willie Mays.
